Lawrence musicians have produced some classic kids' CDs in recent years: one is Melanie Dill's Alphabet Parade, which I love in part for its beautiful sound and earnest lyrics. ("Peek over and look around/look around, look around")It's geared at preschool-age kids, and I swear the title track-- actually a series of tracks spread out over the album involving, you guessed it, a parade of letters -- gave our kids a big boost in learning to read.
The other CD is "If You Ever See an Owl," by the Terrible Twos, who will be playing on the Replay Lounge patio this weekend, Sunday, July 8th, at 5pm.
The Terrible Twos, fronted by Matt Pryor, is the kid-oriented alter ego of The New Amsterdams, one of the most successful groups to emerge from the Lawrence scene in recent years. The songs are about things kids love: dinosaurs, presents, ladybugs, pizza and chocolate milk. If you don't already have this CD, you should buy it. I'm not embarrassed to say that I've put it on plenty of times when the kids aren't around.
Also, if you've never taken the kids to the Replay, don't be scared. It's actually not a bad kid place during the day, as long as you don't mind watching them climb the outdoor furniture or having to take them to what may qualify as the dankest bathroom in town.
